Background Membership
Free includes unlimited manual entries and one custom category at a time. Membership adds global search, connected-library imports and synchronization, and unlimited custom categories.
Purchases are made through the App Store. The full price, billing period and trial eligibility are shown before confirmation. A trial automatically converts to a paid subscription. One introductory trial is available per subscription group subject to Apple eligibility. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Manage or cancel in your App Store account settings. Apple handles refund requests under its rules and applicable law.
When Membership ends, saved entries and categories remain available to view, edit and delete. Paid imports and global search stop, and new categories are subject to the Free limit. Deleting the app or your Background account does not cancel your Apple subscription. Membership does not replace third-party subscriptions or sell rights to third-party content.
Operator and agreement
background is operated by Egor Knyazkov. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to these Terms and the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
App license
The iOS app is licensed, not sold. Unless a separate custom license is presented in App Store Connect, your license to the app is governed by Apple's Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement. These Terms additionally govern the background account, synchronization, website, and related online services.
Your account
Provide accurate information, keep access to your account secure, and notify us if you suspect unauthorized use. You are responsible for activity performed through your account unless applicable law provides otherwise. Do not share passwords, verification codes, recovery links, or integration credentials.
Your content and public profiles
You retain ownership of notes, images, links, and other content you submit. You grant background a limited, non-exclusive license to store, process, reproduce, and display that content only as needed to operate, secure, synchronize, and improve the service. The license ends when the content is deleted, except for temporary backup copies and legal obligations.
You choose what becomes public. By publishing a profile, category, or entry, you authorize background to display that selected content publicly until you disable sharing or delete it. Do not upload content you do not have the right to use or publish.
Acceptable use
background has zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive users. Public profiles and entries provide a reporting action, and you can block another user immediately. Blocking removes that user's content from the lists available to you and sends a report to the operator for review.
You may not use background to:
- break the law or violate another person's privacy or intellectual-property rights;
- publish harmful, abusive, deceptive, or unlawful material;
- probe, bypass, disrupt, or overload security and service limits;
- access another person's account or data without authorization; or
- automate extraction or redistribution in a way that harms the service or its providers.
Third-party services and metadata
Optional integrations and search results depend on Apple, Spotify, Steam, MyAnimeList, Google Books, Goodreads, Yandex Music, and external metadata providers. Their availability, content, and accuracy are outside our control and may change. Connecting a service also means accepting that provider's terms. Metadata, artwork, trademarks, and service names remain the property of their respective owners.
Availability and changes
We work to keep background reliable, but the service may be interrupted for maintenance, security, provider failures, or circumstances outside our control. Features, integrations, storage limits, and these Terms may change. Material changes will be reflected by an updated effective date or an in-app notice when appropriate.
Disclaimer and liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, background is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis without warranties that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that third-party metadata is complete or accurate. Nothing in these Terms excludes rights or liability that cannot legally be excluded. To the maximum extent permitted by law, the operator is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential loss arising from use of or inability to use the service.
Ending use
You may stop using background and delete your account at any time. We may restrict or terminate access when reasonably necessary to protect users, comply with law, or address serious or repeated violations of these Terms. Sections that by their nature should survive termination continue to apply.
